Susan Frankenberg: Professional BackgroundThis provides a brief summary of my teaching career.Susan Frankenberg is a professional educator and author, a seasoned parent and grandparent, and a life-long Read Aloud advocate. She has taught and nurtured hundreds of elementary and middle school students and she has raised three children from infancy to adulthood, arguably with excellent results. Throughout all of these years Read Aloud has been an important part of her child-rearing philosophies and her ongoing day-to-day activities. Susan received her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from the University of Tennessee and graduated with Academic Honors. She has been certified to teach in the states of Tennessee, Georgia and Connecticut and her 20-year teaching career has included working with a diverse cross-section of students spanning grades 3 through 8, including experience meeting the varied needs of Special Education students. Susan received an "Outstanding New Classroom Teacher Award" from the Hamilton County Education Association. She has also been recognized by graduating high school students as "one of the teachers who most influenced their educational experiences." She has participated in The Tennessee Governor's Academy of Teachers of Writing. And, she has developed a reading and creative writing enrichment workshop for elementary school students. Susan's greatest joys in teaching have involved the nurturing of students to not merely understand, but to enjoy learning and growing in the areas of literature, poetry, creative writing, and her greatest passion of all, reading. Additionally, she has served as a school facilitator for Read Aloud, working with parents as well as students to promote the joys of reading. Susan currently teaches fourth grade at Lookout Elementary School in Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. She still has a passion for reading and a genuine love of books. She's been known to spend hours in the children's section of local bookstores looking for that special book that will spark interest in one of her students. And, if you visit her classroom, you'll find a vast selection of literature that strives to relate to the interests and needs of virtually all of her students.
